There was a time when most of my day was spent preparing for the actual work. Gathering context, pulling threads together, organizing what happened yesterday so I could figure out what to do today. That part is over.
I built a system where AI handles the operational layer. It remembers what happened yesterday, what's due today, and who I need to follow up with. It drafts my emails, pulls context from dozens of parallel threads, and synthesizes information I would have spent hours gathering manually. On a good day, the thinking has already been organized before I open my laptop.
Here is what it does not do.
You can teach it the context. You can feed it the history, the names, the sensitivities. What you cannot teach it is when to override all of that because this particular morning is different. It does not know when to push back on a stakeholder who said no, or how to reframe a pitch in terms they didn't know they cared about until you said it that way.
The operational layer is solved. Context, memory, drafting, synthesis, tracking. All of it runs at a speed I could not have imagined two years ago. But judgment under incomplete information, reading rooms, building trust that compounds over years, knowing when the output is directionally right but contextually wrong, that is entirely mine. And it turns out that is not a small residual. It is the whole job.
AI revealed what I was always supposed to be doing. The thinking, the relationships, the taste. Everything else was overhead.
That is true if you automate the overhead. If you don't, you will keep spending your years on work the machine should have been doing, and never get to the work that only you can do.
You will hear that AI is coming for your job. It is not. It is coming for the part of your job you were never meant to be doing in the first place.
