Claude Docs is a Google Docs killer in the making

Claude Docs is a legit Word/Google Docs killer in the making. Here’s a quick walkthrough.

Claude Docs is a document editor that both you and Claude can create and edit. It has all the basic features you need and even supports embedded charts that link to an in-line table you can edit, which means you can do some of your Google Sheets work without leaving the document.

What’s new is that Claude can also add ‘widgets’, which are small custom drawings it builds inside the doc with editable text. This could be things like a flowchart, wireframe, or a UI sketch.

The edge comes from collaboration with teammates and Claude. When you highlight text and ask Claude to change it, it edits the doc and replies in the comment thread with what it changed. Because it can also read from all your connectors, it can bring information from those apps into the doc when you ask.

Claude's artifacts suite started as simple hosted HTML pages and now covers Design, Slides, Dashboards and Docs, all working off the same context. With each iteration, the collaborative features kept getting better. Despite its high cost, Anthropic has built incredible enterprise lock-in through PLG, making Claude Docs a strong workplace collaboration product.

If Anthropic keeps moving up into the application layer, fully owning the long-term context layer is the obvious next stop. Claude already has context on everything that drives output quality, like your conversation history, skills, and memory.

Google had every piece of this. It owns your emails, storage and docs, so most of a company's context already sits with Google. Yet no one opens a Google Doc to use Gemini because work context lives in dozens of apps that only Claude connects to.

The lab with the best model gets to swallow the ecosystem around it, and Anthropic is going for the jugular of work context.

If Google Docs was the web-native disruptor to Word that gave us real-time collaboration, then Claude Docs is the AI-native disruptor to Google Docs, coinciding with another massive shift in how people want to work. And that’s why it stands a real chance.
