Meta may have found its next Instagram after 14 long years with its personal AI agent Muse. Instagram, acquired in 2012, was Meta's last cash-cow product. Since then, it has tried everything to find its next big breakout product.

Meta is extremely good at three things:

- Owning a social graph and stuffing a clone into it (Stories, Reels, Threads).
- Buying the product it could not invent at the right time (Instagram and WhatsApp).
- Turning a small hardware category into a Meta category through a combination of form, distribution, and a software hook (Quest in VR and Ray-Ban Meta in AI glasses).

It is bad at developing greenfield consumer products with no pre-existing graph, and hardware that has to become a new default device/platform.

Muse is the first bet in years that checks everything Meta does well. It will plug into our existing social graph via WhatsApp, with capabilities to join groups and act on our behalf.

Believe it or not, even within corporates, most real work happens not via Gmail or Slack but WhatsApp. This unlocks a business use case for Muse in countries like India and Brazil.

Its Instagram integration will be an underrated moat. Instagram is the largest social discovery layer for information on offline experiences, as well as brand discovery and shopping.

Meta has struggled to monetize WhatsApp at scale and has been biding its time. Now the right opportunity has come, and overnight WhatsApp becomes both the captive distribution channel and the new interface for the world's default personal agent.

Muse abstracts away the complexity of how LLMs work, which has held back adoption among non-power users. In this new interface, you don't see the thinking traces, tool calls, plugins, or skills. Everything but the output stays out of sight.

Once Muse launches outside the US to 3 billion WhatsApp users, it will become the most widely distributed freemium consumer AI product after ChatGPT. The difference is that this one is supported by the firehose of cash from Meta's ad business, in-house models trained specifically to be exceptional at this product and one of the largest compute buildouts in tech, made in anticipation of this new demand.

Zuckerberg has already announced his intent not to charge consumers directly, but to take a cut of transactions flowing through the platform from businesses. If Meta sets the standard early, Muse gets its own agent app store, turning it into a platform.

If Muse can show ROI to users, it could even help Meta's ad business, given the kind of personal data it will access.
